9Zero's Climate Eye

It’s (Past)Time

Last week, my co-founder Matthew and I were at Climate Week New York City. With more than twice as many events as last year, we had high expectations–and the week has exceeded them in every way.

The theme of this year’s Climate Week NYC is “it’s time,” and while we agree, we might go further to say that it’s long past time. After decades of building momentum and making commitments, we need to accelerate the pace of change and the magnitude of impact. And to do that, we’re going to need to help each other. As always, it’s the people that have made this week so inspiring–speaking directly with climate leaders on the most pressing issues, meeting and building the climate community, and hearing new perspectives from around the globe. Some personal highlights and takeaways:

  • Unlike SF and Seattle, NYC is "back" in every way to pre-COVID living. It's vibrant and exciting–we need to keep striving towards this on the West Coast. I am always reminded that VC represents less than 3% of all capital and is dominated by the Bay Area; the other 97% of capital is in NYC.

  • Nothing beats IRL meetings and better still, getting to know people over a dinner or glass of wine. WFH MUST be mixed with IRL if you want to succeed.

  • We have had an exceptional response to 9Zero expanding to NYC. Sign up here for more details as they become available.

  • Seeing 9Zero members at EVERY event

  • The Climate Tech x AI Unconference hosted by early 9Zero member company Climactic (shoutout to Josh, Raj, Peter and Haley for a great event!)

Missed the action? You can still watch the keynote speeches and sessions here.

1️⃣ Value First

Since we last spoke, we’ve added new investors to our database of current climate investors. If you’re looking to raise or just start building connections, these are the folks you should know. Have more names to add or want to share your own? Reach out to [email protected].

🗓️ In-Progress and Upcoming Climate Events

Thanks to those who submitted new events! Check them all out in our climate events database, and contribute to the community by submitting future events.

For Founders: R&D Tax Credits

Most companies do not realize that they can easily get significant tax credits. However, a number of recent court cases show that proper advice is essential. I have personally used and would highly recommend speaking with Corporate Tax Incentives LLC (CTI). CTI will conduct a free assessment of your company, they are highly experienced and unlike many, they stand behind their work when contested. Getting this right is key - please reach out to Frances [email protected] and mention 9Zero sent you.

We are LIVE in Seattle

The coffee is brewing and the doors are open–9Zero Seattle is now live! We’re thrilled to be the new community hub for all things climate. Much more to come in the next Climate Eye, but for now, check out upcoming events to see what’s happening. Heading up north or know someone in Seattle? Book a tour or forward this newsletter to them!

📈 Climate is everything the light touches…

Source: Zillow Media Room

If you’ve been window shopping property listings on Zillow lately, you may have noticed a new addition to the map: for-sale listings on Zillow now include information about their climate risks. This includes ratings in five categories — flood, wildfire, wind, heat and air quality.

Zillow isn’t alone. To keep pace with the changing world, over the next 5-10 years, every company will need to consider how climate both affects and is affected by their business. No matter what industry or field you’re in, you’re in climate, too.

Since we launched, we’ve hosted nearly 40 events, and met thousands of new community members. If you haven’t gotten involved yet, now’s the time–the more engaged you are, the more value you’ll find in this amazing community. Get in touch with us about hosting an event, forward this newsletter to a friend, or stop by to see us in San Francisco or Seattle.

Live somewhere else? Request a hub in your city and you might just see us sooner than you think.

Climate–together, we got this.
